How does Blogging Improve SEO?
When calculating your website's SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Google and Bing take into account a few core factors, although their algorithm is very different in certain ways. One of the easiest ways to improve your SEO is what we call "Relevant Blogging".
What is a Blog?
If you have a Wordpress, Joomla! or other CMS website, blogs are already a core part of your website. These CMS systems organize webpages as Articles (Joomla!) or Pages (Wordpress) within Categories such as News, About, Services, Blog, or anything else you can think of to separate pages into concise areas. Then you can create Menu Links in your CMS to a specific Page / Article, or a "Category Blog"; which will display all your Articles in the Category you choose when creating the Menu Link. So a Blog is just an area of your website that displays all the Articles in your Blog Category in your CMS. With me so far?
If Trig is your webmaster, they have already created a Blog Category and Menu Link for you, so all you have to do is login, look for the Admin Links that say "Create New Blog Entry" and start writing! If you have trouble, contact our support team and we will be happy to assist you!
If you don't have Trig as your webmaster, fear not! You can just "Google it!" If you don't have a CMS Website, you will need to create the new pages manually. Look into building a CMS site.
"Writing is not my thing"
Most of us are not poets; writing is a chore for many business owners. But owner-up now and take this seriously. Writing Blogs about your business experiences, customer encounters, jobs you've done or colorful anecdotes is essential to show your audience who you are and what you're really about. People can tell when you are writing from your heart, and not from as Ad Company - and so can Google. Remember rule number one in the Google Webmaster Guidelines - do NOT write your site for the Search Engines, write it for your customers.
What's a "Relevant Blog Entry"?
When you write a Blog entry, it's important to use keywords that are relevant to your website. If you sell lumber, you should title your Blog entry something like "New Cedar Shingles Coming In Tomorrow" rather than "Getting a Delivery Tomorrow". You can also write about things you want your customers to know before they get to your shop, call you, or ask a question, in your Blog. Use relevant keywords in the title and body of the page, don't be repetitive and remember your 8th grade grammar classes - Google is worse than your teacher in grading your site.
Bring in Social Networking
If you don't already have one, ask your webmaster to install a Facebook or other Commenting System in your Blog, to encourage visitors to talk about your entries. They can ask questions and get answers from you in this easy to use Commenting environment, and you will be notified when a new Comment is added, even set it to be moderated before publishing new Comments.
Facebook Commenting is the quickest and easiest way to go.
